Tim Burton's "A Pirate"

"It w as wonderful"

date: September 1, 2009

But are you sure it's okay to upload this to Newgrounds? I mean, wouldn't that be considered... piracy?

September 1, 2009

Author's Response:

No no, this was meant for Newgrounds. Tim Burton has gone viral for some reason. I would assume he's trying to reach the 12 other kids who haven't seen Nightmare Before Christmas before they get the opportunity to watch it and become fangirls.

One Dimensional Quest

"YES YES YES"

date: August 18, 2009

I have been wanting to do something like this for a long time, except 1st-person view instead of top-down. This is actually 1D vision of a 2D world, not a true 1D game, which would have very limited possibilities.

It's a good start for programming special effects, but otherwise uninteresting. Keep at it.

I wasn't trying to impress anyone. It is a visual app for a DJ friend, just thought I would share. But this is for the party crowd.

Pretty hot shit. I'd like to see a version where the dispensing/drinking part is just set to loop with a random voice clip.

Psai

"Terrible design, bitmaps, not frightening"

submission: Psai
date: November 29, 2008

First of all, there was no entertainment value in it for me. It just wasn't terrifying in the slightest. Bodies, he's coming for you, yeah, we get it. It's all been done before, and it was only really adrenaline pumping the first time anyone did that, and maybe even not then because we'd already become desensitized to that through movies using the same effect. Try actually developing the characters. You make people expect it when you hint at emotional investment, like knowing the person being currently tortured. On top of that, it wasn't challenging either. Everything was obvious. It was also pretty short. The music was unoriginal and thus tiring by cliche. I mean, it's even called "Generic Horror Atmosphere #1".

Learn to draw in Flash. Bitmaps look disgusting, hog space, and defy the purpose of Flash. None of these effects on your bitmaps can't be accomplished with vectors.

If you can scroll up and down, don't make it so that whenever you try and scroll up or down a large object pops in front of your vision. ESPECIALLY if you need to be able to actually interact with objects in those areas. It's almost sinful. You're basically sending a message to the player that you don't want the game to be played, because every time they try and play it they have to trick the game into letting them by finding the sweet spot where they can place their cursor over the quest object without it being covered up by their hands or a mostly useless items menu.

On the computer section, the window is small, so the interface icons need to be bigger, if they do anything at all. I clicked on the Xs to close the windows, but it did nothing. If they're not supposed to close, make them supposed to close. When I have to open new programs by feeling around for where they were when I could see the desktop, I'm using a broken computer. I congratulate you for not going through that fake interface, file system convoluted bullshit that everyone who puts a computer in a game feels they need to do, and only including the necessary files for the gameplay and story on the computer.

The items reappear when you move away from them, then look back, so you can get as many breakers as you like. The breaker puzzle is useless.

There's no option to turn the music off, and the safe is too quiet to hear over it. It was also annoying how you had to make a full rotation each time before the next number in the combination would come. I haven't had a padlock in a while, so maybe I just have poor memory, but I'm pretty sure you only have to reverse the direction, not go a full rotation every time. So if your combination was 1,39,1 you would just start at zero go forward one, back two, then forward two to unlock it. It's annoying and confusing.

You should never have to take out an item to use it right after you necessarily used it just before. This happens twice in the game. You use the crowbar to break the glass, then you have to take the crowbar right back out to get the axe. It's obvious that you'd use the crowbar. Same with the safe. You have to have the stethoscope to even get to it, so it's obvious that you would need the stethoscope to unlock it. If the steps weren't redundant, you should just leave the items equipped. But they are, so you should eliminate those redundancies. After you break the glass, you should get the axe as a result, and you shouldn't need the stethoscope to go to the combination lock screen it's self.

In spite of those sickening design flaws, the cursor was actually aligned decently. You know those point-and-click games where the cursor hotspot is some odd place like halfway between the knuckle and first joint of the finger that should be pointing at said hotspot? Your cursor was not perfect, but it certainly wasn't one of those.

Bill History Month

"Fine Work, by My StandArds"

submission: Bill History Month
date: July 18, 2008

Excellent texturing, and quite funny, with the Bill Cosby sneaking up on the pudding, circling it like a shark in hopes that he can catch it off guard and it will open to reveal to him a chocolatey treat. The periodic switching to the other Bill is good, too.
